Depolarizing Politics

Depolarizing Politics

Intro

Polarization doesn’t just divide our politics — it can divide families, friendships, and communities. Yet across the country, organizations are working to build understanding, reduce hostility, and create space for real dialogue.

Depolarizing Politics isn’t about erasing our differences — it’s about learning how to engage with them. That means:

  • Taking in news with critical thinking 📰,
  • Expanding our civic education 📚, and
  • Practicing the skills of listening and debating with respect 🗣️🤝.

This page highlights organizations and tools that help reduce division and strengthen democracy — whether you’re ready to act, practice, learn, or simply read with fresh eyes. 👀

Taking Action

  • Braver Angels 🔵🔴 — Citizens from left, right, and center joining in workshops, debates, and skills training. A strong voice and an empathetic ear, working side by side.
  • Living Room Conversations 🛋️ — Free guides that help small groups hold structured conversations across divides.
  • Essential Partners 🌐 — Training and resources for communities to build constructive dialogue.
  • ICCCR – Organizations Bridging Divides 🎓 — A Columbia University–curated directory of groups nationwide, highlighting organizations that bridge divides, foster dialogue, and strengthen civic understanding.

Practice Opposing Conversation

  • Sandbox 📱 — An app that pairs you with someone of a different political view for weekly, one-on-one conversations.
  • BridgeUSA 🏫 — Campus chapters led by young Americans promoting multi-viewpoint, respectful political dialogue across partisan lines.
  • The Listen First Project 🗣️ — A nation-wide coalition supporting empathy-first bridge-building and healthier political conversation.

News & Perspective Tools

  • Tangle Newsletter ✉️ — Tangle is a subscriber-supported, nonpartisan newsletter that presents balanced arguments from across the political spectrum—plus “my take.” About 80% of its content is free to read or listen to, with only a small portion behind a paywall. Tangle has grown beyond the inbox, now offering a podcast, YouTube videos, interviews, and live events.
  • AllSides ⚖️ — A media-bias transparency platform with ratings and charts for news outlets. Compare how the same story is covered from the left, center, and right — helping readers break out of filter bubbles and think critically.
  • News Literacy Project 🔍 — A nonprofit teaching adults and students how to separate fact from fiction in today’s media landscape.
